Trading the Plancius for Skis!

The Shackleton Crossing team sleeps on South Georgia Island tonight. After approaching the island in 20 plus foot waves, the Plancius settled in calm King Haakon Bay, where the team dispatched gear laden zodiac boats to shore. Before that though, the team had to thoroughly clean and vacuum every piece of gear to be brought ashore. These stringent bio-security measures prevent visitor-borne invasive species from throwing the environment off kilter.

Post Plancius Pulk Packing

After organizing their pulks under the watchful eyes of some king penguins and an elephant seal, the team got to work on today's ascent. They began the day at sea level (obviously!) and, after nine and a half hours' travel,  sleep tonight at 1,700'. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and the scenery was magnificent!

King Penguins in King Haakon Bay

As much as the team enjoyed the Plancius voyage so far, it sure must've been pleasant for the them to stretch their legs under today's bright sunshine amongst marvelous mountain scenery. The journey has begun in earnest. Tomorrow they continue to trace the Boss' (Ernest's, not Bruce's) footsteps!

Make sure to listen to Anja's audio dispatch below. Due to a poor signal her dispatch is cut off just as she starts telling us about the beautiful scenery. Hopefully we'll have a better connection tomorrow!
