First Full Day Out

First off, PolarExplorers would like to thank Seven Arrows Elementary in Pacific Palisades, California for following along on our adventure to South Georgia Island! Remember that we LOVE it when our followers ask us questions. Simply ask the question by commenting on an entry and we'll answer it the next time we update the blog.

Today is the team's first full day on the sea, and they are currently about 250 nautical miles from shore. The Plancius travels at a cruising speed of 10-12 kts, so they can expect to make about 250 nautical miles per day. It's a uniquely sublime experience to look out from the ship deck and see nothing but water and sky all around you!

The Plancius Observation Room

So what's everyone up to? Today the team had the opportunity to hear some of the on board scientists lecture on the area wildlife, history and geology. South Georgia Island is of course famous for Ernest Shackleton's incredible open boat journey and island crossing, but its vast biodiversity and natural history are just as compelling. We at PolarExplorers highly recommend watching the South Georgia segments of the Frozen Planet series (well, we recommend the whole series too!).

Plancius Dining Hall

Our team eagerly await their chance to witness this awe inspiring environment firsthand. Until then they are enjoying life aboard the very comfortable Plancius. The seas are bit bouncy now, but the forecast predicts that the wind will die down in the coming hours, a welcome relief for those still finding their sea legs!

Thanks so much for following! Check back tomorrow for another update from the far south seas.
